The HealthPathways program has recently embarked upon an evaluation process to assess its value to clinicians and the health system, and to identify opportunities for improvement.
Mid and North Coast HealthPathways is delivered by a collaboration between Healthy North Coast, the Mid North Coast Local Health District and the Northern NSW Local Health District. It was first commissioned in 2014 and now has nearly 600 live pathways with 1,600 users each month.
The evaluation will conduct a case study of the antenatal shared care pathways, which for many years has topped the charts as the most popular suite of HealthPathways. Interviews will be conducted with local GPs, obstetricians and midwives to understand how the pathways improve the integration and quality of care and what can be improved in the future. A regionwide consultation of all local GPs will also be conducted.
Program co-ordinator Kerrie Keyte said that she was looking forward to the evaluation process.
“As the program matures, it is great to have this opportunity to identify which aspects of HealthPathways are most effective in supporting our local general practitioners,” Kerrie explained.
HealthPathways Clinical Editor Dr Sarah Mollard agreed.
“As a GP, I see how important collaboration between health care providers is for patient outcomes, so we want to make sure our HealthPathways work hard for GPs and our LHD colleagues to help us achieve this.”
The evaluation will be conducted by researchers from The Science of Knowing, who were selected following an open public procurement process by Healthy North Coast. Ethics approval will be sought and it is hoped that this evaluation will add value to the local and international pool of evidence about integrated care.
