Go4Fun is a successful and evidence-based program that supports the treatment of childhood overweight and obesity. This free NSW Health program is open to children aged 7-13 years above a healthy weight (>85th percentile for BMI) and their families.
What’s involved?
The program consists of 10 sessions throughout the school term that are delivered by qualified health professionals, including dietitians and exercise physiologists.  The program is attended by the child and their parent or carer. There are three different versions of Go4Fun available, catering to different family needs:
- Standard Go4Fun: face-to-face program delivered over 10 weeks
- Aboriginal Go4Fun: a face-to-face program tailored for Aboriginal children and their families
- Go4Fun Online: designed for families who cannot attend a face-to-face program
In Term 3 2021, Standard Go4Fun programs are being run in Goonellabah and Banora Point and an Aboriginal Go4Fun program in Tweed Heads. Registrations are now open for your eligible patients.
Evidence shows that Go4Fun worksÂ
Evaluation of Go4Fun found a high program completion rate (>85%) and program results show significant and sustained improvements in all key areas measured. Post-program assessment consistently shows reductions in BMI and waist circumference, increased fruit and vegetable consumption, improved fitness and improved self-esteem.
Having the conversation about a child’s weight
Many parents don’t know when their child is above a healthy weight. That’s why a health professional’s role is vital, as they can screen for and address a child’s weight status as part of normal growth assessments. NSW Health’s Healthy Kids for Professionals website offers great resources to support the weight management of young patients, including advice and examples on how to speak sensitively to families about weight issues.
How to refer
There are several options for referral:
- Refer an individual via practice software. Medical Director (‘Go4Fun® child obesity treatment program – NSW’) or Best Practice (‘Go4Fun® referral form’)
- Refer one or more individuals using this online referral form
- Encourage bulk self-referral via letter or SMS. Your practice can use PEN CAT to identify eligible children through the dashboard report on children’s BMI.
