In response to young people’s growing vaping rates, Cancer Council NSW (CCNSW) commenced a national research project ‘Generation Vape’ in 2022 to examine vaping among 14-to-24-year-olds, parents and high school teachers.
CCNSW leads the Generation Vape project in partnership with the Daffodil Centre and the University of Sydney, along with state and federal government health partners and philanthropic partner Minderoo Foundation.
Generation Vape is the first and largest research project of its kind to take place at a national level in Australia. The research is providing critical insights into public health policy, programs and educational resources and has highlighted vaping as an urgent issue requiring immediate policy action.
While the Generation Vape study is providing a wealth of data and insights, CCNSW is looking for community stories to support the research and advocacy for stronger government action.
CCNSW is looking for people aged 14-24 years; parents, guardians or carers of young people aged 14-17 years, and high school teachers to be community ambassadors for future Generation Vape activities and media.
Community stories could involve:
- using participants’ quotes about the issue of e-cigarettes in written media such as blogs, media releases and articles
- filming short video clips answering important questions around e-cigarette use, to be shared on social media
- participating in traditional media interviews (anonymously if preferred)
- attending advocacy events with key stakeholders.
Potential content areas or key questions for people aged 14-24 years may include:
- How easy are vapes to access?
- Are you aware of the current laws relating to e-cigarettes in Australia?
- How common is vaping among people your age?
For parents, guardians or carers:
- Are you concerned about your child(ren) using e-cigarettes or vapes?
- What needs to be done by government to better support parents, guardians, and carers?
For teachers, principals or administrators:
- How is vaping impacting your school/students
- What needs to be done by government to better support teachers, principals and administrators?
