We know that residents in aged care experience better health outcomes with regular primary health care.
The General Practice in Aged Care Incentive (GPACI) aims to encourage the delivery of more proactive face-to-face visits, more regular, planned reviews and more coordinated care planning, to improve the quality of general practice care for around 200,000 residents in residential aged care homes across Australia.
This incentive availability is an important part of the Australian Government’s response to the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety and Strengthening Medicare initiatives amongst a raft of recommendations and planned changes in response.
Voluntary registration of practices, GPs and patients in the program commenced on 1 July 2024, though the pre-existing aged care incentive will be paid for a last time for the July PIP quarter ending 31 July 2024.
The new GPACI incentive will be paid on financial quarterly periods (July-September) rather than the PIP quarters (August-October). A month overlap will exist this year as part of the transition.
The first quarterly assessment period for GPACI is 1 July 2024 – 30 September 2024
Eligible GPs and practices registered in MyMedicare via HPOS will receive incentive payments for providing their MyMedicare registered patients who live in residential aged care homes with care planning, health assessment services and regular visits.

What will happen next?
Over the coming months, Healthy North Coast will support participating practices and Residential Aged Care facilities to develop workflows so that residents receive regular quality care in a way that is viable for practices and their staff.
This includes support to individual practices and facilities, ‘same-page’ round tables with shared care providers (aged care homes, general practice and other service providers), as well as supporting resident education and community awareness.
Need support?
If you need immediate assistance to understand how to register for GPACI or the process to register your residential aged care patients, please contact your Primary Health Coordinator and we will be happy to assist.
Quarterly practice visits from our Primary Health Coordinators are also a great opportunity to speak to us about your experience of the GPACI and any assistance you might need.
Jo Winwood, Associate Director for Aged Care and Living Well, is coordinating Healthy North Coast’s GPACI support program. You can contact her at [email protected].
We are working hard to ensure mutual benefits for residents and their families, for aged care service providers and for health professionals in the sector and we very much value your input into localised implementation of these Commonwealth initiatives.
