The Department of Home Affairs has temporarily extended its Free Interpreting Service, provided by TIS National, to cover non-Medicare patients receiving their COVID-19 vaccine.
This extension supports the Australian Government’s objective to encourage non-English speaking residents in the Australian community to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
TIS National makes telephone interpreting services available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For people who do not speak English well or at all, translating or interpreting services are essential in situations where informed consent is required.
Medical practices and pharmacists can use their existing TIS client code to request interpreters for both their Medicare and non-Medicare patients. For those who are not already registered with TIS National, registration can be done online at https://tisonline.tisnational.gov.au/registeragency.
To support telehealth consultations, TIS National offers a video remote interpreting service. Medical practitioners can book an interpreter to assist with patient consultations taking place on most third-party video conferencing platforms, such as healthdirect Video Call, Skype, and Zoom.
