With strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards and growing expectations for person-centred care, dementia training has never been more vital. Aged care professionals now have access to a range of free and specialised training programs designed to build confidence, improve care quality, and support people living with dementia.
The Dementia Training Program (DTP), funded by the Australian Government, offers free accredited education for aged care workers, including onsite services and an online portal. It focuses on advanced dementia care, behavioural management, and reducing restrictive practices.
Dementia Australia provides flexible, impactful training aligned with the Quality Standards. Programs like Dementia Essentials and the Dementia Leadership Program help staff build practical skills, improve communication, and foster supportive workplace cultures. The Ask Annie app offers bite-sized, scenario-based learning for frontline staff.
Dementia Training Australia (DTA) and the University of Tasmania’s Equip modules offer additional free and paid options, covering topics such as LGBTI-inclusive care, behaviour support planning, and de-escalation techniques.
These resources complement initiatives like the Advance Project, which supports aged care teams in initiating conversations about advance care planning and palliative care.
Investing in dementia education ensures aged care teams are equipped to deliver safe, compassionate, and high-quality care – because when we get it right for dementia, we get it right for everyone.
