During National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June), Reconciliation Australia invites all Australians to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories, to share that knowledge and help us grow as a nation.
Did you know…?
27 May 1967. The 1967 Referendum made history, altering the Australian Constitution. More than 90 per cent of people voted for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to have the right to vote.
27 May 2018. First Reconciliation Day public holiday in ACT.
28 May 2000. 250,000 people walk for reconciliation in Australia.
29 May 1992. Torres Strait Islander flag launched – green represents Australia and PNG, blue Torres Strait waters, the black line and Dhari head dress are the people.
30 May 1990. Tiwi receive title for Tiwi Islands.
3 June 1992. Myth of ‘Terra Nullis’ was overturned after a ten-year battle in the courts. The Mabo decision, named after Eddie “Koiki” Mabo who led the fight to change the laws, was a turning point for the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights, because it acknowledged their unique connection with the land. It also led to the Australian Parliament passing the Native Title Act in 1993.
