Obesity in Australia is one of the largest public health challenges facing our population. More than 60% of Australian adults are obese and almost 10% are severely obese.
Excess weight, especially obesity, is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, some musculoskeletal conditions and some cancers. As the level of excess weight increases, so does the risk of developing these conditions. In addition, being overweight can hamper the ability to control or manage chronic conditions.
The recently published Obesity Management in Adults HealthPathway is about managing obesity in adults aged between 18 to 65 years and mainly covers nutritional and behavioural modification considerations.
A conversation with your patient regarding weight can be a very sensitive area for many people. The assessment section provides a guide and tips to approaching the conversation with your patient about their weight in a tactful way and lists suggested areas for further assessment.
The management section provides general management information for all patients and review and follow-up guidelines for monitoring and evaluating you patient’s progress.
In the referral section, there are patient referral pathways to local dietitians, physical activity programs, psychological therapy and exercise physiologists. If further specialist consultation is required, referral pathways to a bariatric surgeon, endocrinologist or psychiatrist are provided.
The patient information section provides useful websites and printable patient information handouts and practical phone apps.
