The Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA) is reminding GPs about the importance of completing an annual cycle of care for people with diabetes.
The diabetes annual cycle of care is a checklist for reviewing diabetes management and general health. It aims to reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications.
A 2018 University of Sydney study found that only 37% of non-Indigenous Australians with diabetes had completed an annual cycle of care. Only 0.9% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living with diabetes had completed one.
The ADEA says data demonstrates that early intervention and appropriate referrals under a GP management plan/team care arrangement, can reduce serious complications and hospitalisations.
ADEA has created diabetes referral pathways to guide GPs on the care of people with diabetes.
Our Mid and North HealthPathways website also contains comprehensive information on diabetes in general and the cycle of care for people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
