It’s not just all or nothing with My Health Record. You, as the consumer, are in control of what health information in your My Health Record is shared and with whom.
Information you don’t want certain healthcare professionals to see can be restricted by setting a limited access code. This means they cannot view the document without the code. They will still be able to see the other information you have chosen to leave visible. If you decide to provide them with access, you give them the access code to view the document.
This is the same when setting a record access code that restricts access to the whole My Health Record. If you visit a new healthcare provider and you would like to give them access to your My Health Record, you can give them your code to view your whole record.
In an emergency when there is a serious threat to your life, the healthcare professional looking after you can ‘break glass’ and override the access codes. This is to gain lifesaving information from your My Health Record. Unlawful use of the emergency access function is subject to civil and/or criminal penalties.
