Since the 2022 flooding and weather event that profoundly impacted our region, Healthy North Coast (HNC) has proudly partnered with local schools, communities and services to support the wellbeing and resilience of young people through the Resilient Kids program.
HNC received a 4-year $10 million grant from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to design, deliver and evaluate the Resilient Kids program for school-aged (8-18) young people impacted by the disaster.
Resilient Kids has provided a range of initiatives for children, young people and their families to recover from trauma, reduce long-term mental impacts of climate disasters and promote social and emotional wellbeing.
Find out more about the program and how it was designed to meet the needs of young people.
As the program comes to a close, HNC is working closely with Social Futures and other partners to support young people to access other local services.
Evaluating the impact
Throughout the program, HNC has been committed to evaluating the impact of Resilient Kids and learning about what works in supporting young people living in communities affected by climate-related disasters.
We have commissioned an external evaluation partner, Beacon Strategies, who have been undertaking a developmental evaluation, which looks at service level data, insights from partners and includes sharing back learnings across the term of the program.
We’re approaching the final phase of the evaluation and invite you to share your experience and insights if you are a:
- health professional or support young people and their families in a professional role
- local community member, advocate or volunteer who has been part of community recovery efforts.
Get involved
You can participate in one or both of the following ways:
- Complete an online survey that explores your experience and outcomes you’ve observed as a result of Resilient Kids. Access the survey.
- Express your interest in joining a focus group session scheduled for 18 or 19 November 2025 to explore what resilience for young people looks like in your community. You can do this by sending an email to resilientkids@hnc.org.au or rachel@beaconstrategies.com.au. Please note it is not a requirement to have had close experience with Resilient Kids program activities to join one of these sessions, as these conversations take a wider community view.
Your insights, along with the experiences and outcomes from participants in the program, will be included in the final evaluation report.
We are excited to hear more from our community to help guide how we deliver programs like Resilient Kids in the future. We will be releasing an impact evaluation report in early 2026 alongside a range of other strategies to share these findings and contribute to the evidence base.
If you have any questions or comments about the Resilient Kids program, we welcome you to get in touch with our team at resilientkids@hnc.org.au.
