BreastScreen NSW has launched a new campaign aiming to make women aware that, regardless of the absence of family history, they are at risk and should have a screening mammogram every two years.
You can download or order resources at:

Discuss the relevance of breast screening with your patients, particularly those that are not screening every two years. Evidence shows that GPs and primary health care professionals have significant influence in a woman’s decision to screen.
Women can book a breast screen either by calling 13 20 50 or booking online if they have received an invitation letter with a booking code from BreastScreen NSW.
Women who require translating services can call 13 14 20 to speak to an interpreter in their own language.
BreastScreen NSW has a wide range of resources available to view, download and order for free. These include brochures for your patients, fact sheets and forms for health professionals, and posters for display in clinics and practices. These resources are designed to provide you with clear information on breast screening in order to support your patients to participate in the BreastScreen NSW program.
Myth: I don’t need to screen as I have no family history of breast cancer.
This is one of the most common myths about breast cancer and it is not true. Nine out of 10 women who get breast cancer have no family history.
Myth: I don’t need to screen as I have no lump.
BreastScreen is for women who have no symptoms. Screening mammograms can detect breast cancers as small as a grain of rice, long before a woman sees or feels them. The smaller the cancer when diagnosed, the more varied the treatment options. If your cancer is picked up by BreastScreen you are almost half as likely to need a mastectomy.
Myth: Exposing my breasts is embarrassing and I might get a male radiographer.
All radiographers at BreastScreen NSW are female and the screening rooms at BreastScreen NSW are very private. The whole process is designed to be as comfortable as possible for women.
