People at high risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer will be offered free genetic testing after the Medical Services Advisory Committee decided to list the test on the Medicare Benefits Schedule.
The free testing will be available from 1 November 2017. It will be provided free once medical specialists had assessed the person’s family history and risk. If someone has breast or ovarian cancer and has the mutations, all of their relatives will be entitled to have the test done for free.
The genetic test had cost patients as much as $2,000, but the price had dropped to about $600. Increased access to the test means more patients with the mutation are likely to be identified.
For more on the decision, read the Medical Services Advisory Committee report.
