Did you know that people on the North Coast experience the highest rate of melanoma in Australia? And that Australia has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world?
We need to do more to keep ourselves safe from the harmful effects of the sun. Fortunately, most skin cancers can be prevented using all 5 forms of sun protection:
- Slip on sun protective clothing that covers as much skin as possible
- Slop on broad spectrum, water resistant SPF30 (or higher) sunscreen. Apply 20 minutes before going outdoors & every two hours afterwards
- Slap on a hat – broad brim or legionnaire style to protect your face, head, neck & ears
- Seek shade
- Slide on sunglasses – making sure they meet Australian standards
As we approach the summer holidays, let’s be extra vigilant to help keep ourselves, our friends and our families safe.
There are plenty of great resources on the Cancer Council’s website including how to check for signs of skin cancer, guidance on how much sun you need and how to protect yourself from getting too much exposure.
Help us spread the word. Be SunSmart this summer!
