National Reconciliation Week, commencing 27 May to 3 June, is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to building respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
This year’s Reconciliation Week has the theme of ‘Be brave. Make change.’ Reconciliation Australia says:
‘Be Brave. Make Change. is a challenge to us all to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for all.’
We also acknowledge yesterday, 26 May, as Sorry Day, recognising the strength of Stolen Generations survivors and reflecting on how we can all assist in the healing journey.
Developed in 2021, Healthy North Coast’s Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) sets out a framework for our organisation to support the national reconciliation movement. It affirms our commitment to respect and acknowledgment of the ongoing healing journey of local and nation-wide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
The North Coast area is a region rich in traditional culture and diversity and is home to the Githabul, Bundjalung, Yaegl, Gumbaynggirr, Dunghutti and Birpai nations. This Reconciliation Week, let’s consider the choices and mindful decisions we make every day that can make a difference, such as what we say, how we expand our knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and history, and how we frame our relationship with the land around us.
