The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has recommended a booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine for people who are aged 18 years and over.
The recommendation follows this week’s Therapeutic Goods Administration provisional approval of the Pfizer vaccine booster doses for those aged 18-plus.
In a statement, ATAGI said booster doses of COVID-19 vaccine ‘are likely to be warranted, in time’, for all Australians aged 18 and over to mitigate against waning COVID immunity and emerging variants.
‘Evidence on the benefits and risks of booster doses is still limited but supports the benefit and safety of booster vaccination, particularly in high-risk groups,’ the ATAGI statement said.
ATAGI supports the use of a single booster dose for those who were fully vaccinated six months ago or longer. People in high-risk groups, including those at increased occupational risk of COVID-19, should be prioritised for the booster shot.
