Late last month, the TGA approved the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for use in people aged 12 to 15 years. The Australian Government has announced that from 9 August 2021, specific groups of adolescents aged 12 to 15 years who have an increased risk of severe COVID-19 are eligible for the Pfizer vaccine. Eligibility criteria has been advised by ATAGI and includes:
- children aged 12–15 with specified medical conditions that increase their risk of severe COVID-19 such as asthma, diabetes, obesity, cardiac and circulatory congenital anomalies, neuro developmental disorders, epilepsy, immunocompromised and trisomy 21
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children aged 12–15
- children aged 12–15 in remote communities, as part of broader community outreach vaccination programs.
