Asthma Australia is warning about the risk of complacency as students begin the 2022 school year focusing on Omicron and the COVID-19 vaccine rollout for children.
Every year there is a well-documented spike in asthma flare-ups when children return to school after the summer break.
This results in an increased reliance on health care resources – emergency department visits, hospitalisations, GP presentations – and days off school.
Not only is this unsettling for children as they start a new year at school, but often it also impacts on time off work for parents and carers.
Asthma Australia is helping children to achieve their asthma goal at school through an ‘asthma adventure game’, which can be downloaded. Asthma Action Plans are available at the Asthma Australia website.
Mid and North Coast HealthPathways also has detailed information on assessing, managing and referring acute and non-acute asthma in children.
