The Australian Diabetes Society (ADS) has launched a package of foot care resources to assist healthcare professionals prevent and manage diabetes-related foot complications.
Recent national data suggest that a lower limb is lost due to diabetes every two hours, with this rate increasing by 30 per cent over the past decade. Foot complications affect at least 15 per cent of all individuals with diabetes, are the most common cause of lower limb amputation in developed countries, and are the leading cause of hospitalisation for this patient group.
Project lead, Associate Professor Jenny Conn said enhancing the clinical skills of health professionals regarding foot care is important for preventing serious diabetic foot complications.
“This involves ensuring that health professionals can perform foot examinations for risk stratification, promote preventive foot care and manage basic diabetes-related foot complications,” she said.
“Health professionals also need to know when to refer individuals to specialist interdisciplinary diabetic foot care units to ensure best possible care is achieved.”
ADS CEO Prof Sof Andrikopoulos said we are pleased to have launched such a valuable healthcare resource.
“I commend Jenny and her team, Associate Professor Paul Wraight and Ms Sonja Rogasch, for their efforts in producing the resources. It is hoped they will lead to significant improvements in foot care for patients with diabetes nationally,” he said.
The ADS, with funding from the NDSS, produced the set of audio-visual resources, which are based on national and international guidelines. The resources consist of the following learning modules:
