The Resilient Kids program – commissioned and designed by Healthy North Coast, delivered by lead agency Social Futures and supported by The Family Centre, Human Nature Therapy and Lives Lived Well – has been awarded the 2025 NSW Resilient Australia Award for mental health, recognising the program’s outstanding contribution to disaster recovery and building resilience in school-aged young people in the Northern Rivers.
The award recognises the work delivered by Social Futures through Stream 2 which provides community resilience building delivered from local hubs and outreach to smaller communities.
Made possible by a $10 million grant from the Australian Government’s National Emergency Management Agency after the devastating 2022 Northern Rivers floods, Resilient Kids had input from 6,600 young people across the region – the largest youth resilience survey of its kind in Australia following a natural disaster.
Since October 2023, the program has supported almost 12,000 children and young people aged 8-18, with a focus on supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth, LGBTIQ young people, those living with neurodiversity, and young people disengaged from traditional schooling.
The program offers counselling, peer support, life skills, creative therapies, and Aboriginal community-led programs. Resilient Kids is strengthening wellbeing, connection, and disaster preparedness for the next generation.
Healthy North Coast CEO Monika Wheeler congratulated Social Futures on the award nomination and said the award recognised the extraordinary efforts of all service providers, young people, families, and communities who shaped the program:
“This award is for the children and young people of the Northern Rivers who shared their experiences, hopes and needs after the floods. Resilient Kids has been built with them, for them, and because of them.
“We are proud to see children and young people’s voices at the centre of disaster recovery and resilience planning for our region – and that Resilient Kids has been recognised as a leading model.”
