With National Reconciliation Week running from today to 3 June, there is a renewed focus on Aboriginal health and the need for ongoing improvement.
The week’s theme is ‘In This Together’. Helping to lead the way is Tweed Heads-based Noell Burgess, who is part of a new regional team striving to reduce health inequities, increase access to services and support disease prevention.
Ms Burgess, whose background is as a dietitian, is an Aboriginal health coordinator with North Coast Primary Health Network (NCPHN). She covers the Tweed, Byron and Ballina areas.
A proud Quandamooka woman from North Stradbroke Island, Ms Burgess has extensive experience as a dietitian. Her roles have included working with Queensland Health in Aboriginal communities, community health, public health and in private practice. She’s also worked supporting Indigenous students in schools and lecturing in nutrition and dietetics at Bond University.
“I’m a big fan of multidisciplinary care and making it really easy for people to access,” Ms Burgess said. “It’s important to try to pull together that care journey for people and make sure they know how to connect to both mainstream care and with Aboriginal Medical Services.
“It’s equally important to help people who are delivering the health services to connect with each other to support their clients.”
NCPHN has recently restructured its Aboriginal Health Team and has four key members, including Ms Burgess, working as Aboriginal health coordinators in communities between the Camden Haven area south of Port Macquarie, north to the Queensland border.
Their responsibilities include needs assessment and planning, program development, creating and maintaining linkages with other sectors and supporting commissioned programs and services.
“I really love to support health care providers and other community organisations to get the best health outcomes for the community,” Ms Burgess said.
NCPHN is currently developing a Reconciliation Action Plan that is committed to working towards a better future together with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities and organisations.
