North Coast Primary Health Network (NCPHN) is delighted that Federal MP Luke Hartsuyker will officially launch the Kempsey Community Suicide Prevention Action Plan on March 12 in Kempsey.
The Kempsey Community Suicide Prevention project was established late last year as part of the Australian Government Department of Health’s National Suicide Prevention Trial. The Macleay Valley was identified as an area experiencing a higher than average incidence of suicide.
NCPHN is one of 12 Primary Health Networks working closely with the Black Dog Institute and their ‘Lifespan’ model to help prevent suicide under this trial.
NCPHN has provided the Suicide Project with a total of $380,000 in Commonwealth funding to design and implement a Suicide Prevention Action Plan. This includes funds to employ a local Suicide Prevention Project Coordinator- Melissa Robinson. The lead agency for the Project is the Macleay Valley Workplace Learning Centre.
NCPHN’s CEO Julie Sturgess thanked the Kempsey Community Suicide Prevention Action Committee and the Project Coordinator for their work and said the launch was an exciting milestone in creating a community-led, multi-sector approach to preventing suicide.
“The plan follows two years of consultation with the Macleay Valley community. It adopts the most up to date best practice care and is culturally appropriate. It also engages community ownership of the issues through prevention strategies. All these steps are vital for community success.”
Kempsey Community Suicide Prevention Project Coordinator Melissa Robinson outlined the keys to ensuring suicide prevention success in Kempsey.
“It’s about creating and delivering community-owned and community-led approaches in collaboration with all the services and providers involved. We are working together towards the same goals.
“The Action Plan has been built in close consultation with community and the Kempsey Community Suicide Prevention Steering Committee to support this concept.”
Principal of Macleay Valley Workplace Learning Centre Mark Morrison said the Plan was a wonderful opportunity for Kempsey and the Valley to develop a multi-system approach to suicide prevention.
“Through the generous support of North Coast Primary Health Network, it’s inspirational to witness groups and agencies working together towards the same goal. Our goal to prevent suicide is empowered through this Kempsey Suicide Prevention Action Plan.
“Our hope is that this collaboration, under Mel’s direction, will have a lasting effect on the reduction of suicide and suicide ideologies within the community.”
