During the middle half of 2019/20, Coffs Harbour residents were inundated with heavy bushfire smoke and multiple high-risk days of localised fire threats that included falling burning ash landing on rooftops.
This project aims to support the residents of Barcoo Court (a community of high social disadvantage) to reclaim the green space of a fire-gutted vacant lot and use it to create a vibrant community garden as a platform for community engagement and wellbeing, social connectedness, mental health healing, recovery and referral education, and disaster preparedness skills building.
Tenants of Barcoo Court seeking green spaces in response to the local bushfires have identified the vacant land at 22 Barcoo Court as a suitable location to develop a shared, community supported, community garden to grow fresh organic produce to supplement groceries and connect with residents in their local community.
