A community garden at Bundgeam Preschool, drawing on community leaders, or Aboriginal Elders, and preschool families to help design, develop and care for the garden.
The aim is to use the garden as a place of learning and healing, where open communication about the hardships of bushfires can be freely expressed and expanded upon by all staff, children, volunteers and families, in a non-traumatic setting. The garden will also provide education opportunities, both in the form of learning about caring for and respecting nature, and the Aboriginal cultural rituals of ‘burning to grow’, thus helping to change the solely negative connotations and feelings of anxiety the children currently hold around fire.
