In May 2022, the NSW Parliament passed the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2022. Effective from Tuesday 28 November 2023, eligible people now have the choice to access voluntary assisted dying.
It is one of several choices available to people approaching the end of life and does not affect a person’s access to high-quality palliative care. A patient can pause or stop the process at any time. All health workers have legal obligations under the Act, including those who conscientiously object.
Healthcare workers can initiate a discussion with a patient about voluntary assisted dying, but this must be part of a broader discussion about other treatment and palliative care options.
