Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Australia and often progresses without symptoms in its early stages. Screening allows for detection before symptoms appear, when treatment is more effective.
Early diagnosis of lung cancer will mean reducing the number of patients who need treatment for advanced stage lung cancer, when the survival rate is much lower.
The National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP) is scheduled to launch in July 2025. The NLCSP is a program developed by the Commonwealth Government to detect lung cancer early, aiming to save lives and improve treatment outcomes.
