Improved cancer screening rates is an Australian Government ‘Headline Performance Indicator’ and NCPHN is committed to improving screening rates in the region, in particular the rates of vulnerable populations.
Through the Women’s Cancer Screening Collaborative (WCSC), NCPHN is working with 26 general practices and primary health care providers (such as BreastScreen NSW and Local Health Districts) to improve cancer screening rates in our footprint. Through primary care data cleaning and analysis the WCSC has identified women at increased risk of under-screening and is targeting these populations.
As this project is coming to its completion, NCPHN had the opportunity to showcase the work of the WCSC at the BreastScreen Australia Conference held in Adelaide during April 2018. The conference provided valuable learning and networking opportunities, and enabled the sharing of projects and ideas from across Australia.
Dr Jo-Anne Adendorff from Tintenbar Medical Centre has taken a leading clinical advisory role in the WCSC project. She presented at the conference and commented, “The opportunity to present the work of dedicated practices and key stakeholders from the North Coast region in women’s cancer screening at such an exciting and well respected platform was so important.”
It was important to promote the close partnership approach the WCSC has taken with BreastScreen NSW North Coast and how this approach has improved primary care engagement in breast screening in the region.
NCPHN was also able to demonstrate the work being undertaken with support from Cancer Institute NSW while building its knowledge, capacity and networks to better support primary care providers on the North Coast to support early detection of breast cancer.
