Educating and changing patients’ attitudes about physical activity and exercise can be challenging. It is critical that the older members of our community find ways to increase physical activity through formal exercise programs.
- 67% of Australian adults are overweight or obese.
- 47% of Australians had one or more chronic condition.
- 65% of Australian adults are not getting enough physical activity for health maintenance.
Exercise is a known therapy to mitigate/manage/prevent these conditions and associated risk factors. As we get older, the risk increases. There is good evidence to support GP referral to exercise programs to improve attendance and adherence.
Arthritis NSW, Diabetes NSW & ACT, the Heart Foundation and COTA NSW are working together on a campaign called ‘Stay Strong to Keep Moving’. The campaign will provide a range of programs that GPs can easily refer their patients to. The referral process is simple, with patients using QR codes to access programs on offer near them. The programs are designed to provide a supportive environment that will encourage:
- participation in aerobic and/or resistance exercise
- independence and self-management
- social connectedness and inclusiveness.
