My Health Record is set to transform Australia’s healthcare system through a range of important benefits for patients, practitioners and the system alike.
Over 90% of general practices across the North Coast have already registered to use My Health Record. Some are starting to realise the benefits, but others are yet to come on board. Why is this the case?
It is well known among practitioners that accessing and sharing patient and treatment information is at the heart of quality coordination of care. This is particularly important for patients with chronic conditions or co-morbidities.
Watch general practitioners Dr Chris Moy and Dr Meredith Makeham talk about how My Health Record is enhancing interactions with their patients:
What is a Shared Health Summary (SHS)?
A SHS is an overview of a patients’ health, uploaded to the My Health Record system by:
- Registered Medical Practitioners
- Registered Nurses
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners
SHSs can improve decision making and care coordination by sharing important information securely online. The information is shared between the individual and registered healthcare providers like:
- Other practitioners
- Emergency Departments
- Pharmacists
- Allied Health providers
- Specialists
It represents the patient’s status at a point in time. SHSs can be created at any consultation. It can include information about a patient’s medical history, including:
- Medical conditions
- Medicines
- Allergies and adverse reactions
- Immunisations
Healthcare providers can also create and upload a SHS when completing a patient health assessment, such as a GP management plan or 75+ health assessment.
Uploading Shared Health Summaries is part of a billable consultation
In addition to ePIP incentives available to practices using My Health Record, uploading SHSs is considered part of a billable consultation. SHS preparation and uploading can be billed as part of the consultation when the patient is present.
