Once again, the Heart Foundation has rewarded Northern NSW for its commitment to women’s heart health with a Women and Heart Disease community grant.
The Northern NSW Local Health District has received $10,000 to raise awareness about heart health with older Aboriginal women living in rural communities across the region.
With this grant, the “Ready Set Go! Healthy Heart” program facilitators will meet with Aboriginal women and develop strategies to encourage women to exercise, eat healthily and learn about maintaining a healthy heart.
The physical fitness part of the program will give women the opportunity to practice team activities.
The “Ready Set Go! Healthy Heart” program will work with organisations including North Coast Primary Health Network, Aboriginal Medical Services and community groups to build on previous Heart Foundation grants.
In 2016 the LHD’s Anthony Franks led the heart disease awareness program and in 2015 the Lismore Women’s Health and Resource Centre received a grant for its “Go Red for Women” Northern Rivers program.
Heart disease is a leading cause of death in Australian women, taking the life of 24 females every day. 48,000 women will be hospitalised with heart disease each year. In Northern NSW Aboriginal people make up around four per cent of the population, but experience twice the rate of hospitalisations for cardiovascular disease as non-Aboriginal people.
