Good news for recruiting more doctors to our region.
The new area of need classification system used by the Commonwealth from July 2019 should help most of the NCPHN region with recruiting more GPs. It looks like many parts of our region now have a more favourable rating. Some areas that were previously not rated as a district of workforce shortage are now rated as an area of need under the new health workforce Distribution Priority Area (DPA) scheme.
The DPA system takes into account gender and age demographics, along with socioeconomic status and Medicare use, where as the previous system was simply based on population numbers.
International medical graduates who are GPs need to work in an area classified DPA to access Medicare under section 19AB of Australia’s Health Insurance Act 1973.
Australian-trained bonded doctors with return-of-service obligations work in DPA locations to access the Medicare Benefits Schedule. Practices located in a DPA location can employ these doctors to increase the workforce and improve the community’s access to subsidised Medicare services.
You can check this interactive map to see DPA areas and also to see district of workforce shortage (DWS) areas that relate to recruiting IMGs for several types of non-GP specialist.
