The University of Sydney offers a free short course for health professionals who care for patients prescribed opioid agonist treatment (OAT) or sedating medications. Collaborating with the NSW Ministry of Health and NSW Users and AIDS Association, the course provides information and training for all health professionals to address issues around driving safety for people on treatment, including:
- Sedating medications, poly-pharmacy, opioid agonist treatment and driving safety.
- Clinical conversations about driving safety and assessing fitness to drive.
- Case studies relating to driving safety for: nursing staff, pharmacists, emergency department staff, OAT prescribers, and general practitioners.
- Legal and regulatory information on fitness to drive and licensing.

You can also access the Fundamentals Training in Opioid Treatment course, which overviews opioid treatment in NSW and is designed to support the safe prescribing of pharmacotherapies for opioid dependence. The course also aligns with the NSW Clinical Guidelines: Treatment of Opioid Dependence. Medical and nurse practitioners will be eligible to undertake the Opioid Treatment Accreditation Course thereafter.
