The diabetes suite of pathways has been updated by the HealthPathways team and includes guidelines and referral advice for the screening and diagnoses of diabetes and management of:
- pre-diabetes
- type 1 diabetes
- type 2 diabetes
- diabetes in pregnancy
There are also updates to pathways on complications of diabetes such as foot disease and screening, retinopathy, hypoglycaemia and nephropathy.
The suite of pathways also includes advice for health practitioners on the management of diabetic patients undergoing elective procedures, sick day management, pre-pregnancy planning and driving advice including assessing fitness to drive.
The recent updates have had collaboration from endocrine specialists, general physicians, obstetric specialists, anaesthetic specialists and specialist diabetic nurses from multiple centres across the Mid and North Coast.
There is a focus on a multi-specialist and multidisciplinary approach required to care for patients with diabetes. The pathways link to specialist and allied health referral pages, which include the referral criteria and service information for public and private options by region.
The pathways include information based on the latest guidelines including up-to-date information on options for diabetes medications, including initiation and dosing and information on available PBS subsidies for each class of medication.
We hope these pathways will assist medical practitioners and their patients in navigating the latest guidelines and treatments for managing the condition and help to enable screening and early diagnosis, as well as allowing quick and easy access to the diabetes specialist services and allied heath in their regions.
HealthPathways are also keen to share the news that there is a new HealthPathways resource for GPs. The GP to GP referral pathway enables those with a special interest, expertise, or qualification to register to receive patient referrals from colleagues.
