April Falls Month is an opportunity to promote falls prevention initiatives across your general practice, community setting or residential aged care facility.
Why is it important to prevent falls?
When older people don’t eat a balanced diet or have unintentionally lost weight, they are more likely to have increased incidence of falls, hip fractures, poor wound healing, osteoporosis and be admitted to hospital.
People with dementia and confusion are at the highest risk of falls, and are also more at risk of being malnourished and dehydrated.

Staying Active
Participating in balance and strength activities is the most important thing a person can do to prevent falls, and thus stay active and independent.
The Northern NSW Local Health District Health offers a free seven-week balance and strength exercise program for 65+ age group.
