Alcohol and other drugs
• 1 in 5 adults aged 16 years and over in HNC consumed more than 2 standard alcoholic drinks compared to 2 in 5 Aboriginal adults aged over 16 years in NSW.
• In 2019, 23.3% of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders were recent users of an illicit drug in the previous 12 months, higher than for non-Aboriginal Australians 16.6%.
Physical violence
Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander participants in the 2021 Heathy North Coast Speak Up survey were asked about physical violence.
Smoking
Nearly 5 in 10 Aboriginal mothers in the Healthy North Coast region smoked during pregnancy compared to only 1 in 10 non-Aboriginal mothers.
