Healthy North Coast is working closely with the Department of Community and Justice (DCJ) and the Local Health Districts to assess the health needs of people staying at evacuation centres.

Ideally, anyone needing medical or mental health support during evacuation would access telehealth services or leave the evacuation centre to attend clinics or services that are still open and can maintain quality and patient safety at their normal premises.

At this stage remuneration is not available, but will be considered as part of ongoing consultation with the relevant NSW government agencies. Thank you to those dedicated GPs and nurses who have already responded.

Please note, DCJ has requested that health professionals do not attend evacuation centres without coordinating their attendance first through this EOI process.

GPs play a critical role in supporting communities during a disaster. After the devastating Northern Rivers floods in 2022, Healthy North Coast, together with The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and other PHNs, developed the Information for general practitioners working in evacuation centres handbook.

This resource provides GPs with guidance on their roles and responsibilities when working in evacuation centres during disasters. It offers an overview of evacuation centre operations, outlines the potential contributions of GPs, and provides practical advice for delivering medical care in these settings.
