By Derek Tys, ACON
I would like to introduce myself as the Substance Support Counsellor at ACON Northern Rivers, based in Lismore. The Substance Support program’s aim is to reduce the harms associated with the use of alcohol and other drugs (AOD) in the LGBTI community by providing free counselling to community members, their partners, friends and family. The service provides confidential FREE short term counselling (up to 12 sessions) and works with clients in a supportive and non-judgmental way, whether their interest is to be more informed about drug use, be able to use in a safer manner or to get support to reduce or stop use.
This service recognises the historical and cultural barriers to good physical and mental health experienced by members of the LGBTI community and we know from research that the LGBTI community are high consumers of substances, both licit and illicit. Although members of the LGBTI community use drugs and alcohol for many of the same reasons as the population at large, there is evidence to suggest that shared experiences of discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity can lead to patterns of AOD misuse specific to LGBTI people.
The funding for this state wide program is from three Sydney PHNs for a period of two years – during this time we hope to clearly demonstrate need for this service here in the Northern Rivers.
Substance Support counselling for members of the LGBTI community is available on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at the ACON Northern Rivers office in Lismore and also by phone or Skype. As the Substance Support Counsellor for the Northern Rivers region, I use a mix of therapies to support AOD clients, including motivational interviewing, narrative therapy, transpersonal/Jungian counselling, art/expressive therapy and ACT Mindfulness.
Give me, Derek, a call on (02) 6622 1555 at the Lismore ACON office to have a chat about the program.
