In conjunction with the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute, the Australian Red Cross Blood Service would like to highlight the therapeutic donation pathway. Patients who meet the Blood Service’s donation requirements can be referred via this pathway for therapeutic venesection. This process may be relevant to your patients.
The Blood Service has an electronic referral system for the therapeutic venesection programme. If you have patients who may be eligible for therapeutic venesection, or have a patient currently on the therapeutic venesection program who requires an updated referral, please visit:
https://highferritin.transfusion.com.au/
The Blood Service does not require any additional pathology results outside of those requested in the therapeutic application.
Web-based referral provides fast assessment and notification of your patients’ eligibility so that venesection can commence promptly. It also assists with devising a venesection plan and advises the common reasons for ineligibility for venesection at the Blood Service. It is accessible from computers, tablets and smartphones.
The Blood Service provides a therapeutic venesection service for patients referred by their treating doctors for a limited number of medical conditions, including genetic haemochromatosis, polycythaemia vera and porphyria cutanea tarda. Patients with high ferritin not due to genetic haemochromatosis are not eligible unless previously accepted by the Blood Service for therapeutic venesection. Patients with secondary polycythaemia are now not acceptable for venesection at the Blood Service.
If you have any questions about referring patients for therapeutic venesection, please check the FAQs at https://transfusion.com.au or email the Therapeutic Help Desk at [email protected].
