Childhood obesity is an ever growing epidemic in our society. Children above a healthy weight have poorer health and wellbeing compared to children of a healthy weight. These children are also likely to carry excess weight into adulthood, placing them at increased risk of developing chronic disease in later life.
As part of the Premier’s Priorities, the NSW Government aims to reduce overweight and obesity rates in children by five per cent by 2025.
Routine measurement of height and weight is one crucial strategy to increase awareness of clinicians and parents about childhood obesity. It also creates opportunities for brief lifestyle education and referrals to secondary services like Go4Fun.
As such, from June 2018 all children between 0-16 years who are in contact with any NSW Health facility on the Mid North Coast will be weighed and measured every three months, with brief advice and referral to appropriate healthy eating active living intervention services
Healthy Kids for Professionals has been developed to support health professionals to manage children above a healthy weight. The website includes a weight status calculator which plots data on a BMI chart and provides information regarding appropriate lifestyle education and secondary referrals.
Further resources and quality improvement opportunities will be distributed in upcoming months to support and encourage compliance with routine height and weight measures.
