On 22 January 2024, an alert was issued regarding the detection of red important fire ants in the community of Wardell, just south of Ballina.
Fire ants are a danger to the community as:
- They kill off native plants and animals and damage ecosystems beyond repair
- They swarm aggressively, stinging over and over, causing a severe burning feeling and allergic reactions
- They restrict the use of backyards, parks, playgrounds and beaches
What do I need to do?
Fire ants can travel, so if you reside on the North Coast, please be on the lookout for fire ants in your community.
Anyone bringing organic mulch, compost, manure, soil, hay, straw, agricultural equipment, earthmoving equipment, sand or other related items into NSW from Queensland must comply with the NSW Biosecurity (Fire Ant) Emergency Order (No 1) 2024.
If you see them, please contact NSW Department of Primary Industries by calling 1800 680 244 or completing their online form.
