by Dr Dan Ewald, Lead Clinical Adviser, NCPHN
From my work with the Handbook of Non-Drug Interventions (HANDI), I can give you a heads-up on a new free internet-based resource for patients with persisting pain: painTRAINER.
The effectiveness of training for pain-coping skills has been established for a while using face-to-face delivery, but it has now passed muster in a randomised control trial delivered as a self-guided internet-based program.
The research has included a range of chronic pain types, particularly pain from osteoarthritis.
The work was done by the Centre of Health, Exercise and Sports Medicine at the University of Melbourne in collaboration with Duke University and Hackensack Meridian Health.
As with all web-based programs, the success depends on the patient completing the program. This can be improved by how well the program is endorsed from their clinician and can be helped by non-clinical reminder prompts.
You can see a succinct introduction on this three-minute video.
