There are some important changes to how children and young people will be referred to NNSWLHD Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHs).
There is now a new single point of entry for CAMH services across NNSWLHD with the establishment of a Child and Adolescent Assessment and Triage Service (CAATS). This new service commenced operations on Monday 23 October 2023.
The service operates on a 7 days per week basis from 8:30am to 8:30pm providing a single point of contact for referrals from the following sources:
• Mental Health Access Line (MHAL)
• Paediatricians
• GPs
• School Counsellors
• Consultation Liaison CNCs
• WHIN nurses and
• MHEC and MHEC-RAP clinicians
• Child and Family Health Counsellors (Community and Allied Health)
• IPARVAN Counsellors (Community and Allied Health)
Please note the CAATS service will not be able to accept direct referrals from other sources and all families, young people, teachers and community members will continue to be required to access mental health services via the MHAL.
CAATS is being introduced with the aim of reducing the time it takes for young people to be triaged and directed to an appropriate mental health service if required. The single district wide service will also facilitate better equity and consistency of service provision to children and young people across the NNSWLHD.
CAATS is a short term assessment and triage service only and children and young people will remain with this service for a maximum period of up to 3 weeks. CAATS will provide children and young people people with an assessment if required (this may be offered over the phone, via telehealth or face to face as appropriate).
CAATS will provide children and young people with safety planning if necessary and the child or young person will then be directed to the most appropriate service to meet their needs either within CAMHS or more broadly in the child and adolescent service system (e.g headspace, child and family health counselling, NGOs and private providers).
In the past, the process for referral by GPs to a CAMHS service has been either by phone call or a written letter forwarded to the ACS team closest to where the child or young person lives. As of Monday 23 October 2023, the site-based ACS teams (Tweed Heads, Byron, Lismore, Grafton) will no longer be accepting referrals for children and young people with mental health concerns.
