Are you a nurse working in primary health care with a big idea for improving the health and wellbeing of your patients, but are not sure where to start?
The Building Nurse Capacity (BNC) program, run by the Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association (APNA), supports nurses to deliver nurse-delivered, team-based models of care – also known as nurse clinics.
Over the last five years, the program has helped set up over 50 clinics around Australia that have had a real impact on local access to health care and improved the health and wellbeing of their communities.
Successful applicants will receive 18 months of expert support from APNA and a $12,000 incentive payment, with the possibility of a 6-month extension for selected clinics.
What sort of clinics will be considered?
For the upcoming intake, clinics will need to focus on one of Australia’s five priority healthcare areas:
- Cardiovascular HealthÂ
- Diabetes Mellitus
- Cancer Control (screening and prevention focus)
- Mental Health
- Injury Prevention & Control (healthy ageing and frailty focus)
Be inspired by a previous BNC participant on the Mid North Coast
In 2022, Kayley Meredith from Coffs Medical Centre was selected to participate in the BNC program, and established a nurse-delivered cardiovascular prevention clinic for people 45-49 years of age.
This [BNC] initiative has had a profound impact on both the nursing profession and the quality of healthcare delivery in our community.
First and foremost, the project provided us with a toolkit resource providing an overview to participants about the BNC project including an implementation framework to guide and support the establishment of Nurse Clinics using a quality improvement approach.
We were exposed to the latest evidence-based practices and had the opportunity to engage in continuous learning. The workshops, seminars, and online resources made it possible for us to stay up-to-date with advancements in medical science, technology, and patient care.
As a result, we have developed stronger patient-nurse relationships and have been able to provide more compassionate care.
It has been a transformative experience for me and my colleagues. The project has opened up numerous career advancement opportunities for me and my colleagues. Many of us have pursued further education, obtained certifications in specialised areas, and have taken on leadership roles within our healthcare institution.
I am immensely grateful for the support and resources provided through this initiative, and I believe it serves as an excellent model for enhancing nursing capacity in healthcare settings.Kayley Meredith
