SafeScript NSW was launched in May 2022 to provide real-time information about the prescribing and dispensing history of patients for certain high-risk medicines to improve clinical decision-making and patient safety. Since then, more than 25,000 health practitioners have registered for SafeScript NSW.
From mid-November 2023, SafeScript NSW will be introducing new functionality that will enable prescribers to manage their applications to prescribe or supply certain high-risk medicines online, where required, under the Poisons and Therapeutic Goods Act 1966.
This new functionality offers an efficient and centralised way for prescribers to:
- easily submit their applications online
- monitor application progress
- receive responses to their applications faster, with approvals issued in real-time in some cases
Initially, applications for approval to prescribe medicines under the NSW Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) and psychostimulants (dexamfetamine, lisdexamfetamine and methylphenidate) will be available online. Pathways for other medicines will be introduced over the coming months.
In conjunction with this launch, the NSW Ministry of Health will be changing requirements for obtaining approval to prescribe or supply psychostimulants, which will reduce burden on prescribers, patients and their families and facilitate patient access to treatment. Further information on these changes will be communicated separately.
For more information on the new approval management process, including who will have access, please refer to the attached factsheet.
