The Department of Human Services has updated their telehealth billing rules.
Medicare benefits are available for video consultations between specialists and patients who are located in telehealth eligible areas. They are also available in eligible aged care facilities and Aboriginal Medical Services throughout Australia. Medicare benefits are also available for clinical support provided by a health professional who is with the patient during the video consultation.

A telehealth eligible area is outside of a major city, which will cover most of our NCPHN footprint except Tweed Heads, though residential aged care facilities and Aboriginal Medical Services in this area are still eligible as exceptions.
Please check your eligibility by searching your address on DoctorConnect.
There are currently 23 telehealth MBS items available to medical practitioners, nurse practitioners, midwives, practice nurses and Aboriginal Health Workers. These items are available for patient-end services provided to patients during their video consultation with a specialist, consultant physician or consultant psychiatrist. These items are for face-to-face consultations when patient-end practitioners provide clinical support to patients during their video consultation. Patient-end services can only be billed when it is necessary for the provision of the specialist service and the specialist service is a MBS rebatable video consultation.
There are also currently 11 derived fee MBS item numbers available to specialists, consultant physicians and consultant psychiatrists. These items let you claim an existing attendance item number as a video consultation.
Details on MBS Video Consultation Items are available via MBSOnline.
