The local communities on the Dorrigo Plateau fought bushfires for more than three months, with many in the community feeling threatened. Local people have since been dealing with stress and trauma caused by the fires.
Shakti Lade’s program allowed people to practice gentle and nourishing yoga and relaxation exercises.
Yoga, relaxation and meditation provide a holistic approach and strategies to enhance mental wellbeing. These techniques were offered in a supportive group environment, providing the opportunity for local people to reconnect.
Participants were encouraged to develop a simple home practice to help build resilience and capacity to cope with future events.
Following each exercise session, participants were given the opportunity to reconnect and develop supportive friends over a cup of tea.
This grant was funded through the North Coast PHN Program and the Australian Government’s ‘Supporting Communities in Bushfire Recovery’ initiative.
