This project supports implementing a model of care for weight assessment and management of children above a healthy weight through referral into the Go4Fun Program. General practices can refer to existing programs or choose to deliver Go4Fun themselves under a tiered model that involves meeting improvement goals and measures. This tiered model is currently only available for general practices in the NNSWLHD.
Healthy Kids for Professionals offers a model of care for weight assessment and management of children above a healthy weight. Detailed support for delivery of this model of care is available on the Healthy Kids for Professionals website.
NNSWLHD is supporting primary care providers to implement the model of care, with a focus on identifying and referring eligible children to Go4Fun.
Go4Fun is a free, evidence based, 10-week early intervention program for NSW children who are above a healthy weight and their families. The program focuses on making lifestyle changes as a family, encourages healthy eating habits and fitness and improves self-esteem in kids.
To be eligible for Go4Fun, children should be between 7 and 13 years old and be classed as being ‘above a healthy weight’ (>85th BMI percentile for age and sex). Parents or carers must also be available to attend each session, with siblings also welcome to attend.
The program is held during the school term after school hours. Sessions run once a week for two hours, over a ten-week period. The program is run by qualified health professionals, including dietitians and exercise physiologists.
There are three versions of the program:
Go4Fun is funded by the NSW Ministry of Health under the NSW Healthy Children Initiative. In Northern NSW, Go4Fun is managed by NNSWLHD with KPIs from the Ministry of Health.
A small number of general practices in the Northern NSW LHD will be identified to support the model of care by referring to existing Go4Fun programs, or delivering Go4Fun themselves under a tiered model that involves meeting improvement goals and measures.

General practices in all local health districts can also refer to existing programs as part of routine care.
