Position Overview

• Title: Child and Family Registered Nurse
• Reports to: Practice Manager
• Key Objective: To deliver holistic, trauma-informed, and culturally appropriate nursing care to children and their families, focusing on preventative health, early intervention, and maternal support. Working as part of the existing clinical team, the nurse will support children, parents, carers and other regular adult patients to access timely, respectful and coordinated care that strengthens family wellbeing and improves health

The Opportunity

As the first point of contact for clients and visitors, the Medical Receptionist plays a vital role in creating a culturally welcoming and professional environment. You’ll coordinate the reception area, manage appointments, and support the smooth operation of our multidisciplinary health service. This position directly contributes to BNMAC’s mission of improving health outcomes for Aboriginal people through connection, respect, and culturally informed care.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Clinical Care & Health Promotion
    • Well-Baby Checks: Conduct comprehensive health assessments, including growth monitoring (weight, length, head circumference) and developmental screenings.
    • Immunisations: Administer vaccinations according to the National Immunisation Program (NIP) and the specific Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander schedule.
    • Antenatal & Postnatal Support: Provide shared care support, including breastfeeding assistance, postnatal depression screening, and parenting education.
    • Chronic Condition Management: Assist in the management of childhood conditions such as asthma, eczema, and otitis media (glue ear).
    • General: Assist with primary care workload when required
  2. Culturally Safe Practice:
    • Work alongside Aboriginal Health Workers (AHWs) and Practitioners to ensure care is delivered in a way that respects cultural protocols.
    • Engage in outreach services to reach families who may face barriers to accessing the clinic.
    • Participate in community events and school-based programs.
  3. Coordination & Advocacy:
    • Referral Pathways: Coordinate referrals to paediatricians, allied health (speech pathology, OT), and specialised Aboriginal family support services.
    • 715 Health Checks: Lead the paediatric component of annual Aboriginal Health Checks.
    • Documentation: Maintain accurate, confidential records via the clinic’s Information Management System – Best Practice.

Selection Criteria

Essential Requirements

• Registration: Current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse (RN).
• Clinical Skills: Demonstrated experience in paediatric nursing, midwifery, or child and family health.
• Cultural Competency: Proven ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Culturally respectful, reflective and committed to anti-racist practice.
• Immunisation Certification: Current Nurse Immuniser certification (or willingness to obtain).
• Compliance: Valid NSW Working with Children Check (WWCC) and National Police Check.
• Collaboration: To work within a multidisciplinary team including GPs, practice nurses, Aboriginal Health Practitioners, Aboriginal Health Workers and allied health professionals.
• Skill set: Strong communication, assessment, care planning, documentation and time management skills. Commitment to confidentiality, professional boundaries, clinical governance, continuous quality improvement and ongoing professional development.
• Current driver licence and willingness to travel for outreach, home visiting or community-based service delivery as required

Desirable

• Experience working in a rural or remote Aboriginal Medical Service.
• Knowledge of the “Closing the Gap” initiatives and their impact on child health outcomes.
• Postgraduate diploma in Child and Family health
• Qualifications in Midwifery or Lactation Consultation.
• Knowledge of child development, family wellbeing, early intervention pathways and local referral networks.
