Namatjira Haven provides drug & alcohol withdrawal management & rehabilitation services for Aboriginal men, with a focus on harm minimisation.
Community need
Namatjira Haven provides culturally safe residential rehabilitation services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men aged 18+ affected by drug and alcohol use disorders and related harms.
Healthy North Coast funds Namatjira Haven’s “Gulgihwen” Residential program as it addresses some of the Priorities that have been identified in the 2025 Health Needs Assessment. Some of these priorities include;
• Enhance access to mental health services and reduce wait times, particularly for psychological therapies to relieve mental health issues
• Explore opportunities to improve mental health and reduce alcohol and other drugs use in Aboriginal communities
• Improve access to appropriate alcohol and other drugs services to reduce wait times
• Reduce alcohol consumption to reduce alcohol-related risks and hospitalisations
• Reduce psychological distress for people in the North Coast to improve mental health well-being
Our approach
The Namatjira Haven “Gulgihwen” Residential Program is a healing service delivered for 5-12 weeks to Aboriginal men aged 18 and over. The program has a focus on connecting Indigenous men to their culture and community by delivering services and activities that are culturally focused and inclusive.
During an average 12 week stay each resident will benefit from:
- • A range of wrap-around clinical supports, including but not limited to, GP, dental, psychology, sexual health.
- • Additionally, residents will benefit from social supports such as housing, legal, financial and relationship education.
- • Provided meals and diet education
- • Participation in running the community including cooking, cleaning and grounds maintenance
- • Structured in-house groups where residents receive education around topics such as behavioural change and alcohol and other drugs, therapeutic processes amongst other practical skills.
