Medicare Mental Health Kempsey
Provides free, welcoming mental health support for people in the Kempsey region, offering assessment, brief intervention, care coordination and connection to ongoing services.
Community need
Many people experience barriers accessing timely mental health support, particularly in regional and rural communities where services can be difficult to navigate or have long wait times. People may delay seeking help until their mental health deteriorates or they reach crisis point.
The Medicare Mental Health Centre addresses this gap by providing a free, welcoming and easily accessible entry point into the mental health system. The service supports people experiencing mild to moderate mental health concerns, those with more complex needs requiring coordination, and individuals who are unsure where to seek help.
The program also aims to improve equity of access for priority populations, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and people living in rural communities.
Our approach
The centre delivers a person-centred, recovery-oriented model of care that focuses on early intervention, collaboration and integrated support. Services are tailored to each person’s needs and goals, recognising that mental health and wellbeing are influenced by a range of social, emotional and physical factors.
Staff work alongside individuals to understand their circumstances, provide immediate support where appropriate, and connect them with ongoing health, community and specialist services. The service complements existing primary care and specialist mental health services while strengthening coordination across the local health system.
Consultation
The Medicare Mental Health Centre model has been informed through consultation with people with lived experience of mental ill-health, carers, clinicians, Aboriginal organisations, community service providers and health system partners. Ongoing engagement with local stakeholders supports continuous improvement and ensures services remain responsive to community needs, local priorities and emerging service gaps.
